Fairfield Ranked As One Of The Safest College Towns In America

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Fairfield has been named one of the safest college towns in America by the home security website SafeWise.

The town, home to both Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University, ranked 24th out of 30 this year.

SafeWise cited the town’s low crime rate, high quality of life and “abundant outdoor recreation.”

“We continually strive to make our community a safe place,” said Todd Pelazza, director of Fairfield University’s Department of Public Safety. “Our collaboration with our town’s police and fire departments are prime examples of those partnerships, including training together in crisis management, violent intruder response and self-defense classes.”

In determining their rankings, SafeWise analyzed the most recent FBI crime statistics and sought out safety-oriented programs and initiatives in college cities throughout the nation.

Durham, N.H., home to the University of New Hampshire, took the top spot in the 2017 rankings, followed by Charleston, Ill.; Rexburg, Idaho; Amherst, Mass.; and Princeton, N.J.
